BUG Ride this weekend!

Hope everyone can make it along to this to show your support to the group and help raise awareness of cycling in our region; the group are doing a lot for us in the background.

1st Calliope outing for 2014

Saturday saw the first Calliope ride for the year with a small group of 8 riders turning up for what was a sensational morning for a ride. As we headed off a group of GSR riders went past us and set off at a fair pace, maybe it was just the downhill but they were getting along well; we parted ways at the Boyne Valley turnoff after saying hello. Overcast conditions were around for almost the whole ride with one very light shower encountered not too far from the end of the ride. While he didn’t head out with us it was great to see Brad Nelson out there knocking out some miles at his own pace, nice work Brad keep at it. First to peel off was Mike as he rode from Tannum, Graeme and Robin were next at 30 out they were out for a 60k ride. Paul sat on the front the whole way for the longer ride with Craig, the Fox and yours truly taking turns keeping him company. Special mention to Kaye for hanging in there, she showed some real grit hanging on up the hills on the way home. You have to feel for Daryl who didn’t even get to turn a wheel over after making it to Calliope only to be called in to work. Maybe he saw Paul and thought oh no not him again ;-) Almost forgot to mention we saw the Mysterious Mysterio out and about, he looked pleased to see us and showed some of his cycling prowess by taking both hands off the bars to wave at us :-p

The next Calliope ride will be in 2 week’s time on Saturday the 9th of March.

2014 Rocky Cup on Wheels

This weekend the Rocky Cup on Wheels fires up for what will be a great weekend of racing. If you want to see some great racing get along and have a look, it really is a spectacle. No sooner has the last rider left the track from one race the next starts straight away. Take your camp chair and nibblies as you can sit right on the top of the track to see all of the action. There will be some food there on offer and the bar will be operating I'm pretty sure.
Brad Lawlor (famous for being seen with Gary a lot) has made the trip north all the way from Melbourne just to compete in this prestigious event. He's been doing the odd bit of racing down south so I'm expecting some good form. Good luck Brad.

Mid Week Update

Last weekends rides were cut short for some with the rain on Sunday morning but at least most people got out and about at some point. It was nice to get out of bed with the sun up for a change though :-)
It's been great to see some new riders appearing out our way with some making there way to the Thursday roll and even Saturday rides. Even spotted some older riders out and about as well, not much chance of seeing them though lol.
Calliope rides start in 2 weekends time on the 22nd as previously mentioned so hope to see you there for a steady ride through the countryside ;-)

Mid week runners hope to see you this afternoon down the Esplanade!

How cool is this mailbox!

First BUG ride for 2014

The first BUG Community ride will be held on March the 2nd out at Tannum once again. Hope you can make it along as these rides are a great way for the different groups in the region to come together and also show support to the BUG. The members of the BUG have been busy on a number of topics and there has been some great progress made when looking towards the future.

Any excuse to finish early

1 lap down on the roll this afternoon and rain was sighted coming in quickly off the ocean, I for one bailed straight away (call me what you will you won't be the first) with a few others not long after. There was a small bunch that carried on to the end with the rain moving away pretty quickly. Great to see the young riders turning up; it goes without saying it applies to the oldies as well ;-) Also welcome to Josh! Hope you keep turning up.

There was some discussion around whether we need to report a missing person with Daryl not turning up again :-)

Rides this weekend - Saturday Dam ride 6am from the Coffee Club in Tannum. For those that want more distance I hear that Scotty is doing at least a hundy leaving the Coffee Club at 5:30am.
Sunday 6am the usual loop leaving from the Surf Club. Of course it might be a weekend of watching DVD's if the rain turns up!

Lastly it's great to have cycling back on the tube now the season is underway! The tour of Dubai is worth watching just to see the spectacular scenery!

Update

Well it’s been a while since I posted something but in my defence I’ve been a little busy with other bike related ‘stuff’.

Over the Oz long weekend a few of us made the trip to Yeppoon and while the weather for riding went bad it was still a great weekend away. Amazing how it can be beautiful one day and a shocker the next. The next location for a weekend away will be southwest a little, stay tuned ;-)

The local road season isn’t that far away from kicking off so it’s time to get some miles under the belt again. The weekly Saturday ride into Gladstone (100) via the highway will resume after this weekend leaving at 5am from the Tannum Coffee shop; firm pace. *when not doing the Calliope ride below.

With Noosa not all that far away (end of April) we’ll kick off the Calliope rides again for anyone wanting to get some miles in away from busy traffic. Distances to start with will be 40 and 100 with the 40 starting an hour later than the 100; the 100 will leave at 6:00am (anyone riding to the 100 we will be leaving the coffee club at Tannum at 5am sharp). Of course you can come along and do any distance you want, don’t feel like you have to just do one of these. Both leave the IGA at Calliope. Starting Saturday the 22nd. Any queries please ask

Over the weekend a few local triathletes headed south to the Hell of the West held at Goondiwindi. I’m pretty sure they all came away pretty happy with how they performed. I think it’s called the Hell of the West because of the drive there!

Mooloolaba triathlon is only around 5 weeks away now so not much time left now to get ready.

A pity that the local Frogs race was called off over the weekend but clearly a necessity; 3 months between races mid-season is certainly not ideal.

See you Thursday for the roll.
